The "Return to New York" arc begins with the definitive fracturing of the team as Raphael’s boiling resentment toward Leonardo’s cautious leadership finally explodes into a physical duel. After throwing Leo through a wall at their Northampton farmhouse, Raph abandons the group to infiltrate the New York City sewers alone, successfully evading and then dismantling Foot Clan patrols while his brothers are still in exile. By the time Leo, Mike, and Don reach the city on Christmas Day, they find a changed Raphael waiting for them in their old lair. He hasn't just been surviving; he has been planning, and he reveals a massive Triceraton warrior as the muscle they need to finally take down the Shredder.
