The Swamp Thing (Alec Holland) finds himself adrift in prehistoric Earth, encased in hardening tree sap that eventually transforms into an amber gemstone known as the Claw of Aelkhünd. While Alec remains trapped in amnesia, Abby Holland begins a difficult labor in Louisiana, attended by Chester Williams and Liz Tremayne while wood elementals from the Parliament of Trees stand guard. Simultaneously, the occult investigator John Constantine tracks the artifact through Vienna, and the villainous Anton Arcane manages to slay a demon and flee his eternal punishment in Hell to pursue his niece.

The long journey ends when Constantine uses a tuning fork to shatter the amber gem, releasing the Swamp Thing back into his own time. Alec Holland immediately travels through The Green to reach the cabin in Louisiana, arriving just as the protective guardian trees howl at the sky. He is reunited with Abby in time to witness the final push and the birth of their daughter, whom they name Tefé after the Brazilian river that serves as the home of the Parliament.
