In the harrowing aftermath of Knightfall, Gotham City belongs to Bane. As the villain executes a bloody purge of rival crime lords, the true Batman lies crippled in the master bedroom of Wayne Manor. Faced with the reality of a broken back, Bruce Wayne descends into a deep depression, feeling his life's mission has been permanently extinguished. To protect his secret, Alfred and Tim orchestrate a fake car accident using one of Bruce's Porsches, providing a civilian explanation for his paralysis. Dr. Shondra Kinsolving is called in to lead Bruce's rehabilitation, though she quickly suspects the "car crash" story is a facade.
Understanding that Gotham cannot survive without a protector, Bruce makes the controversial decision to bypass Dick Grayson (Nightwing) and hand the mantle of the Bat to Jean-Paul Valley. Under strict orders to avoid Bane, Jean-Paul dons the cape and cowl, joining Robin to signal to Commissioner Gordon—and the city—that Batman is still in the fight.
