Superman faces a crisis of conscience as he learns that his own presence—specifically the Kryptonian artifact known as the Eradicator—is the likely source of Jimmy Olsen's bizarre mutations. During a high-stakes examination at Professor Hamilton's lab, the device is accidentally activated, resulting in a catastrophic explosion that temporarily transforms Jimmy into a giant, stretching entity. Though Superman is able to contain the energy and return Jimmy to normal, he realizes the Eradicator is too dangerous to remain in a populated area. In an attempt to bury the threat forever, he travels to the desolate wastes of Antarctica and hurls the device into a deep ice crater, unaware that the sentient machine is already beginning to self-repair and reactivate.
