As the "Reign of the Supermen" reaches its climax, the true villains are revealed: Mongul and the Cyborg Superman have conspired to destroy Coast City and plan to do the same to Metropolis. While Superboy discovers his unique telekinetic abilities to escape his shackles and fly back to the city, Lois Lane follows her gut instinct that the Cyborg is an impostor. This suspicion leads her to a meeting with Steel, who shares her doubts about the official narrative. Their investigation is interrupted when a giant robot—dispatched by the villains—threatens Metropolis, prompting a fierce battle involving Steel and Supergirl. The skirmish concludes with the shocking arrival of a weakened but determined Superman, wearing a recovery suit and emerging from the robot's wreckage to join the fight against those who desecrated his name.
