Lex Luthor II, desperate to find a cure for his failing health, pressures his scientist, Sydney Happersen, to experiment with Superman's DNA. Their efforts result in another Superman clone, who unexpectedly turns pale and attacks Happersen with heat vision before fleeing.

Meanwhile, Superman investigates the devastation at Hob's Bay naval base, only to find himself blamed for the destruction. He rushes back to Lois Lane's apartment, only to find the police waiting. Lois has been kidnapped by the rogue clone, who is now being hailed as a hero by the citizens of Metropolis.
