Gambit #1 (December 1993) launched the very first solo miniseries for the Ragin' Cajun, capitalizing on his massive popularity from X-Men: The Animated Series and the 90s comic boom. Written by Howard Mackie with moody, shadow-drenched art by Lee Weeks and Klaus Janson, the four-issue series dived headfirst into Remy LeBeau’s secretive, southern-gothic past. The story kicks off when Gambit's brother, Henri LeBeau, infiltrates the X-Mansion to warn Remy that a deadly conflict is brewing back home between New Orleans' rival Thieves and Assassins Guilds. Before they can fully escape, Henri is murdered by a strike team led by Julien Boudreaux—the vengeful brother of Gambit's estranged wife, Bella Donna. Tracking the killers, Gambit discovers that Bella Donna is actually alive but trapped in a comatose state. Accompanied by Rogue, Remy returns to the French Quarter to navigate the violent politics of his old life and face the ancient force pulling the strings.
